The Green Line Extension (GLX) project will extend the existing MBTA Green Line north from Lechmere Station to further service in Somerville, Cambridge, and Medford. The Union Square Branch opened for passenger service on March 21, 2022. The Medford Branch is scheduled to begin passenger service on December 12, 2022.
The communities of East Somerville, including Gilman Square, and South Medford, including Tufts University and Ball Square will be the biggest beneficiaries of this Mass Transit project. Easier access to Boston from these sections of Somerville and Medford that were mostly dependent on bus routes or long walks to the closest Red Line or Commuter Rail stops has been a boon for real estate values and residential construction.
The proximity to Boston and nearby Davis Square has always made Medford an appealing bedroom community for younger professionals and families in Greater Boston. And now with more public transportation options available and soon to open, the interest in Medford is at an all-time high with home values following along.
