There are 23 neighborhoods in Boston, as recognized by the City of Boston’s department of Neighborhood Services. Those 23 neighborhoods are included in 84 sub-districts, squares and neighborhoods in Boston which total 107 neighborhoods. There are a lot of neighborhoods to choose from. 


Every family is different. Every neighborhood is different. Here are some of the best Boston neighborhoods for families to consider and explore when looking for their new home. 

 

Brighton

Brighton : The neighborhood of Brighton is identified as a “dynamic and peaceful neighborhood (that) is a great place for young families and professionals” by Neighborhood Services. The neighborhood contact is Conor Newman, Deputy Director of Neighborhood Services. 
The neighborhood is on the Charles River and includes multi-family homes and condos. It is populated by young families, first-time home buyers, young professionals and college students. There are a number of small business, pubs and restaurants along Washington Street that runs through the neighborhood. The neighborhood received an overall grade of A+ from Niche.com in 2022 (including an A for families, an A- for diversity, a B+ for public schools and a B- for crime & safety). Charlestown

Charlestown is populated by immigrants and young professionals along with a well rooted Irish population. There are plenty of parks, coffee shops and restaurants in the neighborhood.

East Boston

Residents enjoy peaceful outings hiking through Belle Isle Marsh Reservation and observing the flora and fauna of the coastal wetlands.

Hyde Park

This is Boston’s southernmost neighborhood, with two public golf courses and a river running through the neighborhood. Hyde Park is good for families looking for a quiet neighborhood, and a home with a yard.

Roslindale

The neighborhood was once considered the “garden suburb” of Boston. Residents continue to enjoy the natural beauty at the 281 acre botanical garden, Arnold Arboretum. The arboretum is part of Harvard University and is open and free every day (the university likes to call it a tree museum). Residents commute to downtown from the MBTA Orange Line and Commuter Rail.

West Roxbury features tree-lined streets and single-family homes. It is well regarded for its civic activism and youth programs. Residents enjoy six miles of handicapped-accessible walking trails, a nature trail, playing fields and a canoe launch on the Charles River at the 100 acre Millennium Park.
